City of Monash Junior Advisory Committe
19 July, 2024

On Thursday 18th of July, our school captains took part in a Monash Council Junior Advisory Committee. The project aims to allow all residents of Monash, including children aged 6 to 12 years, to participate in decision making and the future vision for Monash. Our students were among students from four schools in the City of Monash to take part in this democratic event.

City of Monash Junior Advisory Committee – by Malone, Blake, Michelle and Gemma (School Captains)

On Thursday 18th of July, the school captains went to the City of Monash Council to take part in a Junior Advisory Council meeting. Students from four schools in the City of Monash took part in this activity.

Our first activity was to draw and write about the different things that we like in our local community. This included things like trees, playgrounds, libraries, bike paths and housing.

We then had a chance to vote on the things that are the most important to us. The topic choices included climate change and the environment, health and safety, active community, planning for the future, respect and inclusivity. We then had a chance to write down some of our specific ideas for the community.

After this we had a morning tea which included muffins and fruit. Following this we had an opportunity to sit in the council chambers with very comfortable chairs. We used microphones to then ask one of the councillors questions about how the council deals with issues, and helps community members.

The day was a great experience to learn about how the local council works and what they are responsible for doing. It also gave us a chance to share our ideas regarding improving our local area. We are hoping the council will listen to our ideas and improve the City of Monash.
